Additionally, mining at Y=-16 and Y=16 gives comparable levels of Lapis, while greatly increasing your ability to find other ores.If you prefer to mine your stone with silk touch to collect it as stone, its very annoying to switch between 2 pickaxes constantly. Any deepslate mined with silk touch will have to be mined again later in order to turn into anything else. At first, this sounds good as you can see both types of stone, but this is actually very annoying when you realize that you have to use a non-silk touch pickaxe in order to get cobbled deepslate to craft all of the variants. While technically the best level for Lapis is Y=0, this is a very annoying level to mine because you will see a mix of Deepslate and Stone. While mining at y=48 gives decent amounts of coal, the best mining strategy for coal specifically is probably surface-level cave exploration, since coal will become more and more common at higher Y-levels until Y=96.Generally only recommend this level if you're specifically looking to mine Copper, which unfortunately isn't useful too useful in large quantities except for as a decoration block. Lower amounts of Lapis and Iron though, and we don't find Gold at all here. This is the best level for mining Copper, and we increase our ability to find Coal at this level compared to y=16. Caving is probably also still a good option though. This is probably a pretty good height to make your early game strip mine, especially since most of the ores here don't suffer from Reduced Air Exposure. Gold and Diamond and still Reduced Air Exposure, so you probably want to use a strategy similar to Y=-54.Īt this y-level, we totally lose the ability to find Redstone and Diamonds, but we find a lot more Iron, and we can also mine some Copper and Coal at this level. This level is great for Gold and Lapis, and provides a good variety in the types of ores you can find. This y-level will be very good for mining large amounts of Diamonds and Redstone, with a moderate amount of Lapis, and small amounts of Iron and Gold.īecause Diamonds are now always Reduced Air Exposure, the ideal strategy is probably strip mining just to find cave systems, and then exploring the caves you find to look for ores. While Diamond and Redstone become more prevalent as you go deeper until the bottom of the world at Y=-64, y=-54 is a good sweet spot because, at this level, lava pools will be at floor height, similar to mining at y=11 on pre 1.18 versions. I've chosen these 4 levels because I believe these 4 levels have the most potential for establishing dedicated mining areas at these y-levels (Excluded levels high in the mountains as those are more map and location-dependent, whereas these are more universal). Keep in mind this data is subject to change until the release of 1.18. This doesn't give us hard numbers as to the number of ores but should give us a decent overview of the ores per y-level on a relative basis. This data was derived from this image, and is the number of pixels wide each ore is at the given level. (#spoiler) = neat! (/rose) = ( full list)ĮDIT: I've made an updated version of this post for 1.18's release, which you can find hereĪs you can see, I've graphed some approximate distribution levels for what I think would be good mining levels in the 1.18+ Ore Distribution.
